This is really what I was chasing down, and I am happy to come here. I can give you some tips on essay topic selection. Choose a topic which you know about. Do not try to take a big topic. Pick a topic that you can write easily. It will help make the write faster and easier because you already have many details in your head. By less research on your side, less effort on your side, it will be easy to write the paper.
Find a good way to approach the topic. This will help you to write in control and will give it a good structure and help you label your thesis. For instance, instead of writing about slavery, filter the topic to a certain country, state, time duration, or part of slavery. Then filter it further. Slavery cannot be a topic because it is too large. Studying one element or one piece of slavery is a sensible topic. Take another example say football. It cannot be a topic. Any player's attitude on practice and how it influenced his success c could be a topic.
Study the topic well. If you have an unclear idea of what you want to write, you need to simplify it. Get some books from the library and read it to get some good points. You can also research the topic in the news or online journals. Research for pictures about the topic online and see what you get. You might find out the viewpoint you are looking for.
Make a record of ideas you have. Make a record of points that interest you. Suppose the topic is ‘what makes a good leader’? Then start writing some words that hark back you of a leader or give the names of leaders who inspired you and why they did. Take down some topics that are feasible. Open a dictionary and go through, writing down good words or ideas that pop out at you.
